DAY 1 OF 14 DAYS OF PRAYER AND FASTING

Mark 6:30–44

In Mark 6, we find two stories colliding. John the Baptist has just been beheaded—his life cut short by an evil king. The grief was fresh, and the loss of such a bold evangelist must have shaken the people of God deeply. And yet, instead of scattering, the crowds became even more desperate for the Word.

They ran on foot, racing ahead of Jesus and His disciples, even forgetting to bring food. Their hunger for the presence of God outweighed their hunger for bread. They were so desperate that nothing else mattered—not comfort, not planning, not even their daily needs.

Jesus saw them and had compassion. He fed them—not only with His words, but with bread and fish multiplied by His power. He supplied both their spiritual and physical needs.

As we begin this 14-day fast, we do so in a moment of loss. Our nation mourns the passing of Charlie Kirk, a bold voice for truth and the gospel. Like the people who mourned John, we also feel the weight of grief. But just as they did, we turn our desperation toward Jesus.

Let us become so desperate for His presence that food, comfort, and routine fade into the background. In fasting, we lay aside the daily bread in pursuit of the Living Bread. And the promise is this: when we seek Him, He will meet us with compassion. He will supply every need—body, soul, and spirit.

Prayer:
Lord, in this season of fasting, make us desperate for You. As the crowds ran to You, may we run to You. As they set aside food for Your Word, may we set aside every distraction for Your presence. Fill us, feed us, sustain us. And in our grief, shine Your light even brighter through us. Amen.
